Each blue dot represents an immune cell called microglia. Microglia patrol the brain and protect it from invaders and damage. In a healthy brain (left), microglia are evenly distributed. However, in the Alzheimer&#8217;s disease (AD) mouse brain (right), microglia cluster in specific areas where amyloid plaques, a hallmark of AD, accumulate. What does it mean for the myriads of connections in the brain and the development of dementia?
