The quest to treat Alzheimer’s: Hope from Research
Microscopy image
These microscopy images showcase the healing potential of an experimental treatment for Alzheimer’s disease (AD). In the first panel (top), green dots represent amyloid plaques, a hallmark of the disease, that accumulate in the brain of a mouse with AD, disrupting nerve cell connections and functions. In the second panel (bottom left), a closer look at the affected areas reveals the fuzzy structure of amyloid plaques (now shown in red) and the morphology of surrounding cells (in green), indicating inflammatory changes. The third panel (bottom right) shows partial improvement of AD pathology following administration of an experimental treatment, which also leads to improved learning and memory in AD mice.
