The Pregnancy of Feeling; The Birthing of Freedom

Sandy Rao

Digital painting and poetry

This piece is about the embodied, lived experience of Black, Indigenous and Persons of Colour (BIPOC) with mental illness being unheard, unseen, unknown in their mental health struggle. Audre Lorde, the inspiration for this piece, stated that “the master’s tools will never dismantle the master’s house.” This piece is an act of resistance for all BIPOC struggling with mental illness and going unseen in society. Even though the colonizers tried to bury them, they had no idea they were seeds.
