Anne of the Studio

Richard Boulet

Cross-stitch, hand embroidery, organza, safety pins

I use quilting, cross-stitching and assemblage techniques to explore queer identity and mental health. I often collaborate with others to create my artwork through which I contemplate the past and hope for the future using mediums with a strong sense of psychological comfort. Anne of the Studio is about friendships made during difficult times in my mental health. The alphabet incorporates the initials of members of a textile club I used to attend. The hand embroidery panel was made by my friend Anne Graham. This work is about a time when my mental health was declining and how I self-medicated before my schizophrenia diagnosis.
