Nexus
Microscopy image
This microscopy image shows a brain region called the claustrum, an incredible nexus of connections. The round circles, in various colours based on their depth in this tissue slice, are brain cells that receive and send information to a staggering number of other areas of the brain. There are even individual cells that wrap around the entire brain. What does the claustrum do with all these connections? It is suspected to be involved in sleep and the consolidation of memories, but there is still so much unknown about this area of the brain.
