Clouding of Consciousness

Anne Cavanagh

Graphite on paper

This piece is a depiction of a state of mind: a detachment from reality, with one’s ‘head in the clouds’ or experiencing ‘brain fog’, with an inability to think clearly. The inspiration for this work comes from my personal struggle with chronic depression. In addition to more commonly known symptoms of low mood or sadness, I have experienced pervasive cognitive fog. This impaired decision-making and hindered the application of crucial cognitive behavioral strategies necessary for recovery. Despite these challenges, creating art has been a therapeutic outlet, facilitating wellness through expression and exploration.
