This movie shows a mouse brain in 3D, made transparent through a technique called tissue-clearing. Each blue dot represents an immune cell called microglia. Microglia patrol the brain and protect it from invaders and damage. In a healthy brain (left), microglia are evenly distributed. However, in the Alzheimer’s disease (AD) mouse brain (right), microglia cluster in specific areas where amyloid plaques, a hallmark of AD, accumulate. What does it mean for the myriads of connections in the brain and the development of dementia? Answering these questions may lead to new treatments for AD.
